With the Plastics Industry, Growth is Certain

Dr.Mahendra Parmar

President,
AIPMA

The Indian plastic industry will grow fabulously in next 5 years. India should be the highest consumer of plastic raw material, better than China and USA. India will be the largest processing industry in the world in terms of quality and service is the view.

Though last year was considered to be a recession period, the demand of the plastics in India, increased.

There has been a constant 15% of growth in Indian plastic processing industry. The pastic industry is expecting a healthy growth of 10-15% for next five years. Considering India’s huge population and demand of plastics, per capita consumption of plastics is likely to jump from 7 kg to 15 kg by 2020. Presently India is exporting plastics valued USD 4 billon. By 2012 growth in export will be almost doubled.

As regards masterbatches market, they can be broadly divided into two types i.e  black and white masterbatches and coloured masterbatches. Black and white masterbaches accounting 60-70% of total volume of masterbatches, balance 30-40% are color and additive  masterbatches. In terms of value, 70% of the value comes out of the color and additive masterbatches and 30% of value comes out of black and white.

As regards the image of plastics, the view is that when the per capita consumption of plastics in India is very low e.g. 7 kg as compared to 25 kg in developed countries, the real problem to be blamed is the littering habits of the people and solid waste management realted issues should we well addressed. There is no equally affordable and convenient alternative to plastics. Neither wood, paper or other material. So if we learn how to use, reuse and dispose plastics in proper manner it we prove to be boon to mankind.

Also, AIPMA is working with the government and raw material suppliers to enable the small and medium scale processor to have access to raw materials as per their requirement so the export as well as local needs can be satisfied.
